In a bid to tackle the raging insurgency in the North-Eastern part of the country, members of the House of Representatives yesterday suggested that the chief of army staff and the headquarters of the Nigerian Army be relocated to Borno.
The legislators are said to have passed a unanimous resolution to place the army and its leader right in the heart of Boko Haram territory in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno.
The rampage of the terrorist sect has continued to cause widespread concern all over the world even as the Governor of Borno, Kashim Shettima, has admitted that the war against terror in the state is far from being won.
The Eagle Online reports:
Apparently disturbed by renewed attacks by the dreaded Islamist sect, Boko Haram, in the North East, especially Borno and Adamawa States, the lawmakers opined that operating from there would enable the Chief of Army Staff to respond swiftly to attacks.
The motion, moved by Peter Biye Guntha (APC, Borno), called on the military authorities to deploy more personnel to the frontline states, especially the villages, in
view of recent experience that the insurgents now target villages.
They called on the National Emergency Management Agency to urgently provide relief materials to the affected victims, while commiserating with the people and government of Borno State. In his motion, Guntha gave account of the recent attacks in Borno and Adamawa States, which left over 150 dead.
In his contribution, Senator Mohammed Monguno (APC, Borno), agreed with the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, who said on Monday that the insurgents are better equipped than the security personnel.

The House also called on the Federal Government to liaise with the governments of the neighbouring countries of Chad, Niger Republic and Cameroon so as to device common ways of tackling insurgency.
